Ships from the US! This catalogue was produced for the exhibition, The Art of the Felt Maker, which ran at nine venues throughout England UK from 31st May 1979 until 14th February 1981. The Foreword begins; "Although felt is one of the earliest materials to have been made by man it has, until recently, received comparatively little scholarly attention. Perhaps its primitive nature, humble use amongst nomadic herdsmen, and lowly position on the floor, caused it to be neglected and despised among the rich cultures of successive generations. It is obvious from the attached bibliography that some travellers had been fascinated by it in the 18th and 19th centuries, but only recently has it received the attention, scientific and artistic, that it deserves." This catalogue shows samples of felt and from Iran, Afghanistan, Turkey, USSR-Russia, Iraq, India, Africa, Scandinavia and Britain. An excellent and gorgeous source of reference for those interested in felt and its storied history and cultural legacy. Very good condition. Previous owner's name on cover and inside cover. Original bookseller sticker on title page. Please refer to images. Comes from a smoke-free and pet-free environment. Every item is packaged by hand and handled with care.

William Green (1760-1823) was an English artist, poet, writer, and landscape painter, who made images mainly of the Lake District, determined to make them "adhere as faithfully as possible to nature." His biographer, Charles Roeder, stated: "his novel method is notable, as the artists have all a conventional and uniform style in regard to the representation of mountains. Those of Mr Green are veritable mountains; he says that he knows their anatomy and he is undoubtedly right. William Green was born in Manchester in 1761. He began his career as a surveyor and moved to London to study engraving. He later settled in the Lake District, the subject of many of his works. He can probably be identified as the same Wililam Green who exhibited landscape paintings at the Royal Academy between 1797 and 1801. He died in Ambleside in 1823. This book is an authoritative appreciation of the artist and his work, lavishly illustrated with colour and black and white reproductions of the artists paintings and sketches. Ref ZZ 1.
