Add to basketPaperback. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. 1st printing of the first American edition SIGNED by the late author on the title page with a black ballpoint pen. At the time of listing this was the only autographed example of the book on the site. A mass market paperback original published in 1958. Ballantine Books #243. Cover price of 35c. 144 pp. Printed and bound in the USA. Will be supplied in a fitted, polypropylene bag. Cover art by Richard Powers. Page edges stained gold. No markings by a previous owner or retailer. The spine is flat, and the binding is supple. Pages tanned with minor tanning of the white cover along the spine. There is soft crease in the front cover at the fore-edge, and the fore-edge of the front cover is nicked at its mid-point. The bottom corner of the back cover is softly turned, and there is a short, diagonal crease in the back cover at the crown of the spine. Shelf wear to the exposed page edges has affected some areas of the stained edges. In the novel, a corrupt businessman facing bribery charges pays a mysterious firm for a new identity. Instead of escaping, he is involuntarily exiled to a neglected Plutonian colony, where he rises through the ranks, uncovering a massive conspiracy regarding humanity's future. The mass market paperback was created in 1939 by Pocket Books, a division of Simon & Schuster, and less than 100 years later distributors and publishers are discontinuing the format. That has generated renewed interest among collectors in the paperback original with original cover art. Richard Powers (illustrator). Signed by Author(s). …
