Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. What Makes Sammy Run? New York: Modern Library, [1952]. Later edition, inscribed for Susan Davis in blue ink on the title page and dated 2003. Cloth in dust jacket. 7 x 4 inches (17.5 x 12 cm); 303 pp.The jacket with creases, price clipped, wear and light staining, ow…nership signature. First published in 1941, What Makes Sammy Run? was inspired by the rags-to-riches story Budd Schulberg's own father, Hollywood mogul B.P. Schulberg, here the ruthless Sammy Glick. The novel was controversial: Samuel Goldwyn tried to pay Budd Schulberg not to publish it, finding the novel anti-semitic, and the Communist Party of the U.S.A., of which Schulberg was a member at the time of publication, tried to get him to change it to meet communist ideals. Schulberg refused, left the party, and later spoke to the House on Un-American Activities, right about the time this Modern Library edition was published. A desirable work inscribed. Inscribed by Author(s).

Contact seller4-star sellerHardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. FIRST EDITION in dust jacket; SIGNED & INSCRIBED on the FFEP by the author, Budd Schulberg; it is additionally signed and inscribed by Anthony Franciosa, who was one of the main actors in the screen version of this play; on the Dedication Page Schulberg h…as corrected and initialed the correction of the spelling of one of the dedicatees. One corner of the FFEP is clipped, probably to remove an earlier owner's name, otherwise the book is about fine. The unclipped dust jacket has some minor wear at the spine ends and some aging to the white color of the dust jacket. There is an introduction by Elia Kazan, who directed the film of the play. There is no 'slug' designating this as a First Edition; after doing some investigation of other copies, this book may be a variation of the usual fashion in which Random House designated first editions. 0.0.
