Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. One of the defining popular songs of the Great Depression, "Underneath the Arches" was written by British entertainer Bud Flanagan in 1932 and became an international success through Flanagan & Allen. For American publication, noted Tin Pan Alley lyricist Joseph McCarthy supplied ad…ditional lyrics, allowing Robbins Music Corporation to market the song to U.S. audiences. This copy represents an especially desirable radio promotion cover variant, replacing the standard performer portrait with Indianapolis broadcaster Easy Gwynn, identified as "Successfully Introduced and Featured by Easy Gwynn, Famous Disc Jockey on Radio Station WIBC." The song later enjoyed renewed popularity during the 1948 revival, but this remains the original 1933 Robbins edition. The copyright page identifies Robbins Music Corporation's U.S. publication rights, with the music originally copyrighted by Campbell, Connelly & Co., London. This copy is in Very Good condition. The cover remains bright with attractive blue artwork depicting the arches and an inset photographic portrait of Easy Gwynn. Moderate edge wear, corner creasing, light soiling, and several small edge chips are present, along with a small pencil notation ("40¢") on the front cover. Interior music pages are complete with no detached leaves observed. There is a short closed edge tear to the right margin of the first music page and light age toning. The rear advertising panel remains clean and fully legible. Bud Flanagan (1896-1968) was one half of the legendary British comedy and musical duo Flanagan & Allen. Underneath the Arches became their signature song and remains one of the best-known British popular songs of the twentieth century, symbolizing resilience during the Depression. Joseph McCarthy (1885-1943) was a prolific American lyricist responsible for classics including You Made Me Love You, I'm Always Chasing Rainbows, and numerous Broadway and Tin Pan Alley standards. His additional American lyrics helped adapt Underneath the Arches for U.S. publication. Easy Gwynn (1913-1990) was a prominent Indianapolis radio personality whose long career at WIBC made him one of the Midwest's most recognizable disc jockeys. Robbins Music's use of his photograph illustrates the growing influence of local radio personalities in promoting popular songs during the 1940s.
