Contact seller5-star sellerHardcover. Condition: Good. This book, "The Children's Punch", is an American reprint of the English original, published circa 1925 by Charles Scribner's Sons. It contains an amazingly fine collection of some of the finest cartoon art that the original "Punch" offered. The illustrations accompany a large variety of nursery rhyme…s and poems , and even some prose (some takes on Lewis Carrol, and Kippling. Some of the poems are humorous, and or even bizaar. And some of them are lightly soft and Pretty (Picnics and gardens and elvin folk - fairy tales, etc. Some (Like "Elizabeth Ellen -Who should Have Been John") are rather tongue-in-cheek --- like I said the text has a great variety. The artists in this book include one by Arthur Rackham ; Ernest H. Shepard (the illustrator of the "Winnie the Pooh" books, and many others); John Tenniel (one of the Victorian eras leading illustrators, famous for his drawings in "Through the Looking Glass" and "Alice in Wonderland"); Bernard Partridge (One might say Bernard was "Punch"; in this book he has one full page drawing - after Tenniel - of the Walrus and the Carpenter -- and likely other smaller images); J. H. Dowd (famous for his sketches of children), Hesketh Daubeny; Edward Tennyson Reed (Reed was an influential political cartoonist); William James Affleck Shepherd (Shepherd was famous for his quirky anthropomorphic animal cartoons); and many others. Lots of the artists are only identifiable by their monograms, which, some of which, I have not been able to identify. It's a smorgasborg of cartoon delectables & memorable poems! TITLE : The Children's Punch EDITOR : M. T. Bryan AUTHORS : Bernard Franklin, Douglas English, Ethel Talbot, A. P Herbert, Stella Sharpley, et al (Many pieces are anonymous) ILLUSTRATORS : Arthur Rackham, E. H. Shepard, John Tenniel, Bernard Partridge, J. H. Dowd, Et al IMPRINT : Charles Scribner's Sons PLACE : New York DATE : No date [ but circa 1925] PRINTER : Hudson & Kearns, Ltd., Hatfield Street, London DETAILS : Oversized hardcover; 8 1/2" x 10 7/8", quarter bound cloth spine with pictorial paper-covered boards (printed red on buff) - rear board blank; no lettering on spine; end-papers have sequential comic line drawings done in black and dark green on buff- these by JAS (William James Affleck Shepherd) - rear end-paper has the same as front; contains numerous line drawings; 98 pages (pagination includes title page) CONDITION -- GOOD ONLY --This is a previously owned book that remains complete and serviceable, with the following particulars noted: EXTERIOR -- The spine extremities are compressed and heavily rubbed.A quite observable sticker scar and loss of surface color due to determined rubbing displays in the upper fore-edge corner (this is mainly the cause of the condition grade). the front cover has considerable rub , small damp stains and smudges; the rear cover has a very observable pattern which closely reflects the paste that was used to attach the paper to the underlying bards. This is entirely a production effect, but is, alas, untoward in effect, The board edges are worn, with small bits of fraying and loss of paper(mostly to the bottom edges which suffer from shelf rub). Corner tips are bumped with attendant splitting of paper (exposing the board). BINDING -- The book is somewhat shaken, with binding materials exposed by cracking here and there. But the text-block remains fairly solid with no detached leaves. . INTERIOR -- The end-papers display toning, which is a production effect. There are various small spots and smudges, but nothing egregious. It is obvious that the book has been read. The pages, for the most part, remain clean and presentable. We have supplied pictures to view. There is no dust-jacket. I've never seen a copy with one, and do not know if a dust-jacket was issued. Arthur Rackham, E. H. Shepard, John Tenniel, Bernard Partridge, William James Affleck Shepherd, J. H. Dowd, et al (illustrator).
