Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book meticulously examines the engrossing history of auxiliary schools, foundational institutes for teaching students with disabilities. Beginning with their humble beginnings in 19th century Germany, the author chronicles the remarkable efforts of individuals like Kern and Stiitzner in establishing special classes for children with learning challenges. The book explores how this movement gained traction in other countries, including Austria-Hungary, Switzerland, Italy, France, and the United States, shedding light on the variations in their development and the challenges they faced. The book delves deeply into the rationale for establishing auxiliary schools, emphasizing the need to provide appropriate education for children whose progress is hindered by mental impairments. It examines the complexities of identifying and admitting students into these programs, highlighting the involvement of physicians and parents in the process. The author underscores the unique challenges faced by auxiliary school teachers and the importance of tailoring instruction to the specific needs of their students. The book's rich insights stem from decades of the author's experience in Halle, Germany's first auxiliary school. He shares valuable observations on the characteristics of students in these schools, drawing upon case studies to illustrate their diverse needs.
