Der Buddhismus, der sich in Tibet ausgebreitet hat, legte von Anfang an grosses Gewicht auf die direkte Überlieferung der Lehre vom Meister an den Schüler. Von herausragender Bedeutung waren daher die verschiedenen, von berühmten Äbten und Mönchen gegründeten Schulen, in denen die Lehrmeinungen der Meister von Generation zu Generation überliefert wurden. Mit dieser direkten Weitergabe der heiligen Texte und mit strengen meditativen Übungen sollte eine rasche Geisteswandlung, die zur Erleuchtung führt, erreicht werden.-In dieser buddhistischen Tradition, die als Esoterischer Buddhismus bekannt ist, spielen «geheime» oder esoterische Bildwerke, die nur für Eingeweihte verständlich sind, eine grosse Rolle. Sie dienen als Visualisierungshilfen, die einen Zugang zu tiefen Schichten des Unterbewusstseins ermöglichen und zu einer Identifikation des Meditierenden mit der dargestellten Gottheit führen können. Aus diesem Grund haben wir den weiter gefassten englischen Titel der Ausstellung «Sacred Visions» nicht mit «Heilige Visualisierungen», sondern mit «Geheime Visionen» übersetzt.
