First edition (per corresponding 1856 dates provided on both the title and copyright pages). i-xviii, 19-331 pages. Hardcover; H 19.75cm x L 12.5cm. Quite poor condition; original brown cloth well stained and worn at board edges; cloth on rear board peeling from lower corner, chipping at spine ends, spine lettering quite dulled and barely legible. Endpapers and flyleaves stained with pencil writing/doodling; front free endpaper missing as is flyleaf and half-title; stains and foxing on interior leaves; char marks and shallow chips at fore-edges of pages iii-xii. Frontispiece portrait of the author with facsimile signed inscription. Editor of "The Tennessee Baptist," James Robinson Graves (1820-1893) authored THE GREAT IRON WHEEL; OR, REPUBLICANISM BACKWARDS AND CHRISTIANITY REVERSED. IN A SERIES OF LETTERS ADDRESSED TO J. SOULE, SENIOR BISHOP OF THE M. E. CHURCH, SOUTH (Nashville, TN: Graves and Marks, 1855) in which he ranted against Methodist doctrine and church practices. Graves's vehemence provoked William Gannaway Brownlow, the prominent editor of "The Knoxville Whig," to respond by publishing THE GREAT IRON WHEEL EXAMINED in 1856 in which he defends Southern Methodism against Baptist dogma and offers theological support for slavery. The two volumes are cited by the Dictionary of American Biography as "the classic recorded example of sectarian controversy in the United States." Brownlow was elected Governor of Tennessee in 1865 and again in 1867 after which he was elected as a Republican to the US Senate where he served from 1869 to 1875. A poor copy but an uncommon book.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the complex history of slavery in the United States, arguing that it was not only sanctioned by law but also by religious authority. The author contends that the Bible has been used to justify the enslavement of Africans, and that this justification has been used to legitimize slavery in the United States for centuries. The book traces the origins of slavery in the United States back to the founding of the country, and examines the role that slavery played in the development of the nation. It also explores the abolitionist movement and the Civil War, and discusses the legacy of slavery in the United States today. This book is a timely examination of a complex and controversial topic, and it offers a fresh perspective on the history of slavery in the United States. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
