The book contains twenty-one lively skipping rhymes designed for different seasons, weather conditions, speeds, and styles (fast and slow skips, backward skips, group skips, hop-on-one-leg skips, and longer endurance skips). Each rhyme is paired with a suggested number of jumps, making the volume both a practical playground companion and a charming illustrated book. Cynthia Mitchell wrote a small group of children's rhyme books in the late 1970s focused on playground and physical play. In addition to Halloweena Hecatee, she published Hop-along Happily, and Other Rhymes for the Playground (Heinemann, 1979, also illustrated by Eileen Browne) and Playtime (Heinemann, 1978, illustrated by Satomi Ichikawa). Her work celebrates traditional skipping, hopping, and playground games through simple, rhythmic verse intended for young readers and active children. Public biographical information on Mitchell is limited; she appears to have been a British writer specialising in children's poetry of movement and play. Eileen Browne (born Birmingham, United Kingdom) is a well-regarded British author and illustrator. Before becoming a full-time writer and illustrator she worked as a school teacher and youth worker.
