Hardback. Condition: Very Good. Reprint. 1972. Reprint of the Universal Library edition. 495pp., a 1-page advertisement for another work by the author and a 2-page publisher's catalogue. Hermann Broch (1886-1951) was an Austrian writer, and The Death of Virgil, first published in 1945, is one of his best known works. The narrati…ve imagines the last hours of life of the Roman poet Virgil, in the port of Brundisium (Brindisi), whence he had accompanied the emperor Augustus, his decision - frustrated by the emperor - to burn his Aeneid, and his final reconciliation with his destiny. Virgil's heightened perceptions as he dies recall his life and the age in which he lives. The book is bound in the original red cloth covered boards with black titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with some shelf wear to the boards and a small dent on the top edge of the front board. The spine ends are lightly bumped. The contents are tight and clean with no inscription.
