Paperback. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Adelaide, Advertising Sales Agency, 1927. Oblong tall octavo (153 × 246 mm), 72 pages with numerous illustrations (from photographs) and pictorial advertisements plus advertisements on the covers. Stapled colour-pictorial wrappers lightly marked and creased, with minor loss of plain paper on the spine; an excellent copy. The Duke, in this case, is Albert Frederick Arthur George (1895-1952), King of the United Kingdom and the Dominions of the British Commonwealth from 11 December 1936 until his death in 1952. He was the last Emperor of India and the first Head of the Commonwealth. The Duchess was Elizabeth Angela Marguerite Bowes-Lyon (1900-2002), the mother of Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon. She was Queen consort of the United Kingdom and the Dominions from her husband's accession in 1936 until his death in 1952, after which she was known as Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, to avoid confusion with her daughter. She was the last Empress of India.…

Condition: Fine. An albumen paper photograph (44 × 29 mm), mounted on a piece of plain card (90 × 63 mm) loosely inserted by the corners in short diagonal slits in a leaf detached from an album. At the foot of the page is a six-line lament for the late Prince, signed and dated 'B. Ravenshaw. March 3rd 1862'; the verso of the leaf is blank. The top corners of the leaf are creased; the photograph and its mount are in fine condition. The following paragraph appeared in 'The Photographic News' (Volume IV, Number 104, 31 August 1860, page 215, sourced from 'The Athenaeum'): 'Photography At The Palace. Mr Mayall has put together, in a "Royal Album", the series of royal photographic portraits made by him from time to time at Buckingham Palace. These exquisite studies from the real life are fourteen in number: one of the Queen and Prince Consort, one of the Queen and Princess Beatrice, one of the Queen alone, one of the Prince alone, one of the Prince of Wales and Princess Alice, one of the Prince of Wales, one of Princess Alice, one of Prince Alfred, one of the Princesses Helena and Louisa, one of Princess Helena alone, one of Princess Louisa alone, one of Princes Arthur and Leopold, one of Prince Arthur alone, and one of Princess Beatrice; each study reproducing, with a homely truth, far more precious to the historian than any effort of a nattering court artist, the lineaments of the royal race. The Album reflects the highest credit on Mr Mayall' (Luminous-Lint website). We have not ascertained whether this particular image appeared in the album, but the portrait is definitely by Mayall.…

Condition: Very Good. Four albumen paper photographs (each approximately 50 × 30 mm), with tiny corner tips snipped off before being mounted on a sheet of light blue paper (230 × 185 mm, now removed from an album). All four have captions in ink written below them (Albert is 'Prince Concert'); they are evenly mounted on the page around a photograph (33 × 46 mm) of an engraving of the 'Great Exhibition, 1862'. Paper lightly marked, with a short closed tear near the top left-hand corner; the photographs are in excellent condition. The following paragraph appeared in 'The Photographic News' (Volume IV, Number 104, 31 August 1860, page 215, sourced from 'The Athenaeum'): 'Photography At The Palace. We have not ascertained whether any or all of these four images appeared in the album, but the portrait of the Queen is definitely by Mayall, and he certainly took a photograph of Prince Alfred in an identical suit (with the same telescope as a prop).…

A cord-bound loose-leaf cloth album (230 × 340 mm) containing 22 gelatin silver photographs (generally 120 × 200 mm or the reverse, with some a little smaller), mounted on both sides of card album leaves with printed captions. The first plate is a composite group portrait of the then-current Adelaide City Councillors under the Lord Mayor Sir Wallace Bruce; the rest show the Royal couple arriving, officiating and generally being feted, plus some of the rare treats they witnessed or received. The first photograph carries the blindstamp of Hammer, a local studio; four others carry the blindstamp of Walter McNeill, 41 Rundle Street, Adelaide; the others are uncredited. Most of the prints have a little silvering-out near the edges; the album is a little rubbed at the extremities, with the bottom corners bumped; ownership details on the front pastedown; the overall condition is excellent.…
