Bristol was a target for heavy bombing due to the presence of the Bristol Aeroplane Company and Bristol Harbour. The city was subjected to 6 bombing raids by the Lufftwaffe between November 1940 and April 1941 resulting in the deaths of 1,299 people and significant damage to over 89,000 buildings.
