Seller: Brothertown Books, Deansboro, NY, U.S.A.
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Special Edition. Here is a lovely leather edition of "The Old Curiosity Shop" by Charles Dickens. The book was published in 1963 by Collins and has an Introduction by R. Brimley Johnson. The frontispiece is a handsome line portrait of Dickens. This particular copy has an exciting cachet for Dickens enthusiasts: It was purchased at The Old Curiosity Shop in London, and has an inscription to that effect on the verso of the front free end-paper, to wit: "Purchased at the Old Curiosity Shop, London, 1966". The book is fully bound in a rich red Levant Morocco leather (that is what it looks like to me), and comes with a tidy slip case. The leather is protected from wear by a clear mylar sleeve. TITLE : The Old Curiosity Shop AUTHOR : Charles Dickens (1812 - 1870) INTRODUCTION : R. Brimley Johnson IMPRINT : Collins PLACE : London DATE : (1963) EDITION : Later Reprint (So stated in the book) SPECIAL ATTRIBUTES : Full Levant Morocco leather binding, with slip case. PROVENANCE : Previously owned; purchased at the Old Curiosity Shop in London in 1966 DETAILS : Contains an Introduction and a Bibliography; approximately 4 3/8" x 7"; full red leather binding with gilt title, etc. on spine; top edge gilt; has a bookmark sewn in; slip case has the publisher's initial monogram in a repeating pattern - printed white on cinnamon red; the end-papers repeat the pattern, white on gray. 511 pages. CONDITION -- VERY GOOD -- This is a previously owned book that remains clean and attractive with the following imperfections and particulars noted : EXTERIOR -- Gilt lettering on spine is bright. Gilt on the top block-edge is bright. The only imperfection I can see is where the indentation at the mouth of the slip-case has made an slight impression on the leather of the rear cover's joint fold (being the exact shape of the indentation - there is no such impression on the front cover.) -- else all is clean and softly luxurious. BINDING -- Solid INTERIOR -- I spotted a couple of leaves with slightly crimped fore-edges - I've shown one, but the effect does not show up in our picture. Also there are two adjacent leaves that have small folded bottom corner tips. These also do not show in the picture taken of them. The effects of these things are fairly small. The interior is clean and presentable. SLIP CASE -- No splitting, just some rub to the edges and corners -- basically clean and presentable. It is doing its job.
