About the book >.>.> This two-volume work was originally planned to commemorate the seven-hundredth anniversary of Dante's birth, in 1965. Its central feature is the catalogue, in Volume One, of all im-portant more or less fully illustrated codices of Dante's poem. To com-plement the catalogue there are some eleven hundred miniatures from a much more extensive body of materi-al, and these form the contents of Volume Two. Professor Brieger has arranged the subject matter of the catalogue, and Professor Meiss pro-vides the discussions of styles and dates. The monochrome plates of miniatures are arranged by cantos, and within each canto they are in chronological order. A preliminary section gives opening pages of the cantiche, diagrams, topographical schemes, and scenes of presentation of a manuscript. A section of colour plates, in sixteen pages, is arranged chronologically. Preceding the catalogue there are three essays: on literary and critical themes, by Pr.

SERIES: Art and Man, Book II, is the second of a series of three books on the history of art published by Holt, Rinehart and Winston of Canada Limited. EXCERPT: INTRODUCTION The period in the history of art covered in this book is still the best known and most admired by the majority of people and especially by those who are critical of modern art. It abounds in names of famous artists and their works seem to portray the "real" world, in all its various aspects, with beauty and dignity. Many people find that Renaissance and Baroque art are more "natural" and "true to life" than that of the preceding or following centuries with the exception of that of Greece and Rome. But they forget that art is never a mirror or a copy of nature. It is the result of a creative act of an artist who uses what he sees in his environment and selects from it material to form an image in his mind which best expresses his thoughts and feelings . . .
