Contact seller5-star sellerHardcover. Condition: Fine. First Edition Thus. Easily the finest copy of this volume as I've handled. Another sterling examplar of the The Folio Society production standards, bound with extremely fine dark blue cloth over boards, gilt-lettered author name and title to spine over burgundy label, sharply and distinctly, intricate… gilt designs to front cover. Housed in a simple, paper-covered slipcase that has done its job admirably. The Folio Society was founded in 1947 by Charles Ede, Christopher Sandford (of Golden Cockerel Press), and Alan Bott (founder of Pan Books), three presses that shared spaces and philosophies for a time until being incorporated in 1971 and then becoming an employee-owned trust in 2021. The Folio Society began as a membership-based book club but then expanded its range to publish multiple titles in fiction and non-fiction; science fiction and fantasy; biography and autobiography (from the publisher's web-site). Previous owner's ink-stamped name inside front and rear flaps, that of H. Baldwin-Price. Fine black-and-white painting of Major General Sir William Napier at frontis, plus 14 fine illustrations and over two dozen maps. [7], 8-329 pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets.

General Sir William Francis Patrick Napier KCB (7 December 1785 - 12 February 1860) was a British soldier in the British Army and a military historian. The years he had spent in France he had occupied in improving his general education, for, incredible as it seems, the author of the History of the War in the Peninsula could not spell or write respectable English till that time. But his career was to be great in literature, not in art. This skill appeared in an able review of Jomini's works (Edinburgh Review) in 1821, and in 1823 Henry Bickersteth suggested that he write a history of the Peninsular War. For some time Napier did not take kindly to the suggestion, but at last decided to become an author in order to defend the memory of Sir John Moore, and to prevent the glory of his old chief being overshadowed by that of Wellington. The Duke of Wellington himself gave him much assistance, and handed over the whole of Joseph Bonaparte's correspondence that was captured at the battle of Vittoria; this was all in cipher, but Mrs Napier, with great patience, discovered the key. Marshal Soult took an active interest in the work arranging for a French translation of Mathieu Dumas. Ref YYY 3.
