TRW Inc. was an American corporation involved in a variety of businesses, mainly aerospace, automotive, and credit reporting. It was a pioneer in multiple fields including electronic components, integrated circuits, computers, software and systems engineering. TRW built many spacecraft, including Pioneer 1, Pioneer 10, and several space-based observatories. In 1958 the company was called Thompson Ramo Woolridge, after three prominent leaders. This was later shortened to TRW. The company's was acquired by Northrop Grumman in 2002. It helped create a variety of corporations, including the Aerospace Corporation, Bunker-Ramo, Experian, and TRW Automotive which is now part of ZF Friedrichshafen. Persons coming from TRW were important to build up corporations like SpaceX. In 1953, the company was recruited to lead the development of the United States' first ICBM. Starting with the initial design by Convair, the multi-corporate team launched Atlas in 1957. It flew its full range in 1958, and was adapted to fly the Mercury astronauts into orbit. TRW also led development of the Titan missile, which was later adapted to fly the Gemini missions. The company served the US Air Force as systems engineers on all subsequent ICBM development efforts, but TRW never produced any missile hardware because of the conflict of interest. In 1960, Congress spurred the formation of the non-profit Aerospace Corporation to provide systems engineering to the US government, but TRW continued to guide the ICBM efforts. Space Log was issued by Space Technology Laboratories, Inc. from 1960 to 1963; and by T R W Space Technology Laboratories from 1964 to Spring 1965. This issue contains a condensed log of space projects and a discussion of NASA's future spacecraft, information on U.S. Spacecraft launches, and research on the Interplanetary Magnetic Field. Thomas Branagan's (1774-1843) was born in Dublin and, in his youth, traveled to England, Spain, and Norway. He also sailed on a slaver to West Africa where he purchased slaves. Branagan converted to Protestantism and soon changed his views on slavery, which he came to see as evil and oppressive. His The Excellency of the Female Character sought to instill virtue and knowledge in young women, lest they be "no better than the wild Indian who traverses the banks of the Osage" and become hindrances to respectable society (see Preface). Branagan's other works include A Preliminary Essay on the Oppression of the Exiled Sons of Africa." and The Beauties of Philanthropy, which appeared with several others in 1804 and 1805. Octavo. xiv, 15-280 pp. Original sheep. Spine and black leather label stamped in gilt. Edges stained yellow. Covers worn. Head and tail of spine and corners lightly worn. Label worn at edges. Brown stain near top edge on pp. 248-252, affecting a small portion of text. Intermittent foxing and offsetting, as usual. Contemporary ink inscription on front and back pastedown. The first inscription reads: "Mary Ann Beales, her book bought of a peddler, 1836." The second inscription reads: "Mary Ann Beales book bought of George Washington, April 8th, 1836" (obviously not the president's, whose dates are 1732-1799). A good copy. Third edition of a scarce title. The half-title notes that this was "printed for subscribers." Originally published in 1807 American Imprints 32462.…
