Half-Calf. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Not applicable. 1st Edition. 107 pages, consisting of 6 tales of the macabre & mysterious. Half calf, marbled boards, rubbed at extremes, olivine endpapers, blank half-title has name cut/removed from top outer corner, contents clean and fox free, hinge splitting at front edge of… spine near bottom. Small slim octavo. A bracing adventure of mystery and ghost story writer and later creator of "Jack Harkaway", he died in 1901. He contributed most of the banned "Prostitution" section of Henry Mayhew's London Labour and the London Poor in early 1860's. Was educated at Eton and became a Barrister in Lincoln's Inn in 1862, saw so few cases he became known as "Briefless Bracebridge". Went on to a career as a writer and managing to put a fair amount of food on the table at it, his last work in 1899 was a Harkaway adventure. He was extremely well received in the USA and stayed there in the 1870's. ** The BL has only a reprint copy of 1866 with 2 titles joined "On the Line and Danger Signal". This single copy found seems to represent the only institutional copy located in the UK. Very Scarce. *SEE: Hubin Vol 4 of CRIME FICTION IV: A Comprehensive Bibliography, 1749-2000.
