Original, not a facsimile. Important text. Rev. Bowden was the first principle of the Connecticut Episcopal Academy in Cheshire, Ct., 1796. He later (1802) served at Columbia College as a professor of moral philosophy and logic. Protected in a mylar slip.

A binding set only, two of the four original full calf boards are present, spine cricked and chipped. 384 and 298 pp., errata slip tipped in at final leaf of Vol. II followed by one page publisher's list. Deaccessioned from a church archive and so stamped on the versos of the title pages. Text blocks are complete and relatively clean, some typical embrowning to the print blocks. Sold as is.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Uncommon. Brown cloth boards with gilt lettering to spine. Gilt decoration to the front board. Boards are generally in good order, just a little grubby and rubbed. Corners are bumped, edges are worn. Spine is faded with bumping to ends, four raised bands. The endpapers have been replaced. 8 full page lithographs (coloured). One or two grubby marks but otherwise clean and tight. Occasional annotations to the textblock in ink. Pagination: xii pp prelims, 261 pp, + 24 pp adverts. Bowden was the British Consular Chaplain at Christiania, Norway - now Oslo. In a fine full leather gilt decorated prize binding from Edinburgh Academy with raised bands and marbled endpapers. Label dated 1867/68 from John Alex Banks, M.A, Master to Hugh Patten. Little rubbing alongside spine and edges but still near fine.See scans.
