Louis Bertrand was born in France and later moved to Algiers; this is his first novel, which explores the complex identity of a French man living in Algeria.Notably, Bertrand's work often valorises the colony and its European inhabitants.This edition decorated throughout with compositions by Maurice Bouviolle, wood engraves by Paul Baudier. With a colourful frontispiece and other woodcuts in black and white throughout.The original wraps and spine and bound in with the volume. Rebound in quarter morocco binding over marbled boards, with gilt to the top edge and new endpapers. With the origianal wraps and spine bound in with the volume. Externally very smart with minor shelf wear and a touch of fading to the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Light spotting to the tissue guard protective of the frontispiece, otherwise the pages are very clean with a touch of age toning, as usual.
