This book offers a captivating glimpse into the fascinating world of 17th and 18th century West Africa, specifically the Gold Coast, the Slave Coast, and the Ivory Coast. The author, a chief factor for the Dutch East India Company, provides a firsthand account of these regions, focusing on their geography, politics, natural history, and trade. With vivid detail, he describes the landscapes, the diverse cultures of the indigenous populations, and the European settlements that were taking root. The book delves into the complexities of the transatlantic slave trade and the role of the Dutch East India Company in its operation. It provides a nuanced perspective on the European interaction with African societies, revealing the conflicts and alliances that shaped these relationships. The author's insights into the customs, beliefs, and political structures of the African kingdoms offer a unique window into the lives of these communities during a crucial period in their history. The book also presents a detailed account of the gold trade, including the methods of mining, refining, and exporting the precious metal. The author's firsthand observations and critical reflections provide a unique and valuable resource for understanding the dynamics of European colonialism in West Africa and the impact of this interaction on both African and European societies. This book offers a rich and multifaceted portrayal of a crucial period in the history of West Africa. Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - An early example of the travel-writing genre, William Bosman's collection of letters, originally written in Dutch and first published in English in 1705, describes the geography and political and natural history of the coast of Guinea. This 1907 edition is presented as a facsimile of the 1705 version, retaining the original typography. Bosman (born in 1672) went to Africa at the age of sixteen in the service of the Dutch West India Company, and spent fourteen years on the Gold Coast. This collection of twenty letters, written to his uncle in the Netherlands, remains an important source of information about this area of west Africa in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. Bosman's accounts are highly descriptive, and his writings cover all aspects of the area, from its flora and fauna to its political, social and legal systems, its enterprising natives and its climate and diseases.
