First Paperback edition, 1st Printing (Preceed by the Rare Hardcover edition) The basis of the film directed by Howard Hawks, starr…ing John Wayne, Montgomery Clift, Joanne Dru, Walter Brennan, Harey Carey, and John Ireland; .** Chase received great critical acclaim for Red River (1948), where he contributed to the screenplay, based on his novel Blazing Guns on the Chisholm Trail. Directed by Howard Hawks and starring Wayne and Montgomery Clift, the film was a huge success and earned Chase an Academy Award nomination; Differences crop up between the novel and the cinematic adaptation, but this is not surprising considering that Hawks rewrote scenes, even though Chase received lead credit as the writer. The opening scene when Dunson leaves the wagon train heading west differs from novel to screen because our protagonist doesn't leave a woman behind as he did in the movie. Hawks follows the novel and adds a scene about his cattle brand that wasn't in the book. Afterward, Matthew Garth serves with the Confederacy and returns to Texas for the epic cattle drive to Missouri. On his way back to The Lone Star state, Matt meets Tess in Memphis on a riverboat warbling tunes for a Frenchman. The stampede scene is different, too. A drover's rifle discharges owing to a broken string.
