First issue of Conrad's unfinished historical novel, set during the Napoleonic wars; notable for the frontispiece illustration of Conrad and Captain David Bone on the "Tuscania" by Muirhead Bone, as well as the introduction by Richard Curle. (slight toning to extremities, edges and endpapers, sm. sticker to endpaper corner). Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Book.

Condition: Very Good. Hardcover in a lightly worn and chipped dust jacket. Thirty-one indexed unpaginated plates, including frontispiece. Blue cloth with gold lettering on spine. "Sir Muirhead Bone, the illustrator of Came To Oxford, was Britain's first officially appointed war artist, serving in both the First and Second World Wars. He is recognized as well for his portraits of Joseph Conrad, his watercolours and drawings of Old Spain, and his works recording the damage and reconstruction in his beloved England following the wars." Parts I-V comprise volume I and parts VI-X comprise volume II. Sir Muirhead Bone (1876-1953) was a Scottish etcher and watercolourist who became known for his depiction of industrial and architectural subjects and his work as a war artist in both the First and Second World Wars; he was appointed the first official British war artist in May 1916.
