The bridge replaced a 70 year old rolling lift bridge at the same site. Construction was completed and opened to traffic on 3rd of November 1986. The paper is in 2 parts. The first part starts with an account of the previous bridge crossings at the site, continuing with the background to the project, the design and site investigation.
