Bound in half vellum, gilt, over green cloth, with gilt block of armourial crest and motto (of the Napier Clan), Tâche sans tâche, on front board; spine with contrasting morocco title label, gilt. Some foxing of fly leaves and title page; otherwise a very good copy. Decorated by printer's device on verso of title and as colophon. A critical edition of the Greek tragedy of Agamemnon by the playwright, Aeschylus, (c.525-c.456 BC), relating the murder of King Agamemnon on his return from the Trojan War, by his wife, Clytemnestra, in revenge for his sacrifice of their daughter, Iphigenia. It was edited by the classical scholar and cleric,Charles James Bloomfield, who graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1808 and was ordained priest in 1810. He published several editions of the plays of Aeschylus before concentrating on his career in the church, serving as Bishop of London, 1828-56. This edition was first published in Cambridge, 1818.
