'The Twelve' reflects the ambivalence and the uneasiness that educated Russians felt during the first months of the Revolution a period that fell between Russia s failures in World War I and the horrors of Civil War that would soon follow. Twelve, which caused great poetic controversy, has no poetic unity. It consists only of flying fragments: bits and pieces from the Orthodox liturgy and revolutionary songs, from vulgar rhymes and popular ditties, from lamentations, the calls of looters, and even prostitutes solicitations. Many of these fragments shock the ear in their juxtapositions. The language of Twelve is alternately elevated and vulgar, archaic and modern, serious and mocking. It describes a whirling, topsy-turvy world caught in a cataclysm that is linguistic and historical and philosophical and meteorological. Man and nature and art are bound together in one crucial historical moment, in the storm of Revolution. Illustrated by Andrey Dmitrievich Goncharov (1903-1979) - an outstanding Soviet painter, People's Artist of the RSFSR, Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Arts, Honored Artist of the RSFSR and laureate of the USSR State Prize. In 1918-1927 he studied in Moscow at VKHUTEMAS - VKHUTEIN under I.I. Mashkov, A.V. Shevchenko and V.A. Favorsky. One of the founders of OST. Nel 1919 Michail Larionov e la moglie Natal'ja Gon arova si stabiliscono definitivamente a Parigi, dove in Rue Bonaparte 13, dal 1910 domicilio di Jacques Povolozky, aveva appena aperto la galleria d'arte La Cible (Il Bersaglio) diretta da quest'ultimo assieme alla moglie Hélène. Povolozky, come Larionov, è ucraino di nascita, ma risiede a Parigi ormai da diversi anni, trafficando con i libri e l'arte: nel 1917 Modigliani immortala Hélène in un famoso ritratto ora conservato alla Phillips Collection, Washington. L'incontro tra la coppia più famosa dell'avanguardia russa e l'editore e mercante d'arte naturalizzato parigino è praticamente scontato: insieme decidono di impegnarsi in un'ampia operazione di divulgazione dei «Dodici», il controverso e risonante poema civile del 1918 con cui il grande poeta petroburghese Alexandr Blok raffigura l'avanzata del bolscevismo in Russia. The 1925 1st Czech edition of Alexandr Blok's "Dvanact", widely considered "one of the first poetic responses to the October Revoluton of 1917". The Russian lyrical poet Alexandr Blok (1880-1921) centered his story on "The march of twelve Bolshevik soldiers (the Twelve Apostles) through the streets of Revolutionary Petrograd, with a fierce blizzard raging around them". The illustrations, highly-evocative woodcuts by Czech artist Vaclav Masek, powerfully complement Blok's verse-in-translation and the book's design --also by Masek-- captures the ominous mood of the "march" while achieving a deeply artistic, very stylized aesthetic. The poem, in its fragile pictorial wrappers, has held up well and is solid and clean and VG to VG+, with very light creasing along the panel edges. The wrappers of this edition were illustrated after Nikolay Kupreyannov (1894-1933), the vignette on the first page after Yuriy Annenkov (1889-1974). The sewed pages torn from the wrappers which has been fixed at the spine with black paper. The pages browned due to paper quality, but in spite of this repair over all still a satisfying copy of this rare first edition. Comes in a folded cardboard. - Der Buchblock ist aus dem Umschlag gelöst, der Umschlag am Rücken gerissen und wurde vom Vorbesitzer mit schwarzem Papier überklebt. Die Seiten sind papierbedingt etwas gebräunt. Trotz der Reparatur handelt es sich um ein im ganzen ordentliches Exemplar der seltenen Veröffentlichung, die wegen ihrer Empfindlichkeit in einem eigens angefertigten, gefalteten Kartonumschlag liegt.
