Contact seller4-star sellerThird edition (as stated upon title page). 214 pages. Hardcover: H 18.75cm x L 12.5cm. Original purple cloth heavily faded to brown with strong staining/mottling; some wear to board corners; shallow cloth loss at frayed spine ends, spine's gilt stamping quite dulled but still discernable; tears to cloth at heels of front and rear joints. Edges well toned; some toning/foxing as well as light soiling to endpapers; mostly light but occasionally moderate foxing to interior leaves. Binding is firm. Only a good copy but an uncommon book of which OCLC locates copies at ten member institutions of both this Memphis 1875 imprint and a preceding 1874 Nashville imprint. With frontispiece b/w portrait of author with facsimile signature and guard sheet, Preface by the author, and Introduction by R.A. Young. Primary text comprised of thirty-eight chapters titled consecutively as "Letter I" to Letter XXXVIII" with moral essays/stories directed at older youths. Reverend Robert W. Blew was the Memphis, Tennessee-based publisher of the weekly journal "Western Methodist" in which he authored a column "Letters to the Children" under the pseudonym "Uncle Bob" and this book's parabolic missives all appeared previously in that publication. Blew fell victim to the 1878 Memphis yellow fever epidemic as did his wife and all six children with a seventh child having passed in 1868. Boyle & Chapman appears to have been a rather short-lived firm as OCLC cites company imprints from 1871 to 1876.…
