ALSO, THE LIFE OF GILBERT MOTIER LA FAYETTE, MAJOR-GENERAL IN THE CONTINENTAL ARMY-MARSHAL OF FRANCE, AND COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF OF THE NATIONAL GUARDS. P…UBLISHED FOR SUBSCRIBERS. Collates as [fronits], i-iv, 5-252, 261-268, 261-607 pages (binding error so that missing 253-260 with pages 261-268 repeated). Hardcover: H 22cm x L 14.25cm. Contemporary full leather binding; boards well scuffed with worn corners; boards' gilt borders and spine's gilt decoration all well flaked/dulled/rubbed; glue repair to tearing at spine head; spine's black title label with gilt lettered "American Biography" worn but legible. Marbled endpapers; tear to ffep. Antiquarian ink and pencil writing on early and late leaves including signatures of "Spencer S. Johnson" - book acquired from a Birmingham, Alabama estate with family roots in Selma which makes the owner quite likely the same Spencer S. Johnson (1811-1837) who is interred at Johnson Cemetery in Dallas County west of Selma. Foldout frontispiece present but torn and creased with far left section detached; edge-worn Hamilton portrait plate opposite page 144 detached and now laid-in; varied foxing/toning and some stains throughout. Binding remains firm. Features an essay "A Summary View of the Causes which led to the American Revolution" (pages 5-33) followed by biographies of fifty-six American Revolutionary War era figures. Published without a table of contents so no list of the book's illustrations but present are frontispiece and portrait plates opposite page 99 (Nathanael Greene), opposite page 144 (Alexander Hamilton), and opposite page 315 (George Washington). The book was issued in several editions and imprints with OCLC citing the first being 1825 with later editions issued in 1829, 1830, 1831, and 1832. The title page of this 1831 Philadelphia imprint does not specify an author but Amos Blanchard, editor of the Cincinnati Journal, is credited as the author for two 1832 Cincinnati editions, one published by A. Salisbury and the other by Robinson and Fairbank. {Antiq-Shelf#3}.

Hardcover: H 22.75cm x L 14cm. Contemporary full leather binding; staining, scuffing, and worn corners to slightly bowed boards which are decorated with gilt borders; front joint splitting with front board somewhat tenuous; muted gilt tooling to spine with gilt lettered title at center; spine heel chipped. Marbled endpapers. Foldout frontispiece lacking. Pencil and modern ballpoint ink writing on ffep verso and on opposing title page; title leaf (pages i-ii) and pages iii-iv missing sections of top margins so as to remove past owner's antiquarian signatures; varied foxing/toning to interior leaves with dampstains to initial and rear leaves; occasional margin chips to leaves as well as scattered soiling and pencil marks; remnant slender stub evidencing missing rear flyleaf. Text block remains firm. Else a good antiquarian copy. Features an essay "A Summary View of the Causes which led to the American Revolution" (pages iii-xxxii) followed by biographies of fifty-six American Revolutionary War era figures. No table of contents listing book's illustrations but LoC catalog copy calls for five plates - so with aforementioned missing foldout frontis book is otherwise correct with four unpaged b/w plates present and bound-in facing page xxv, 253 (tear), 344 (bottom margin chip), 353 (deep margin chip and tear).
