Charles Smith Bird, 1759-1862. The father of Charles Smith Bird was a West Indian Merchant who was of a highly religious character objecting for instance to his children reading Shakespeare. C. S. Bird went to Trinity College Cambridge, ordained and became Curate of Burghfield, near Reading. He added to his income by taking pupils including Lord Macaulay. In 1843 he secured the Vicarage of Gainsborough. In 1844 the proposal for admission of Jews into parliament aroused Bird's indignation, and when in 1849 cholera ravaged Gainsborough Bird assiduously and bravely administered to the wants of the sufferers. He was an ardent entomologist and died at The Chancery in Lincoln where he was Chancellor.
