Condition: Very good. - Octavo, softcover bound in printed tan wraps. The edges of the wraps are darkened & lightly chipped & there are small circular stains & a light vertical stain to the front wrap. 56 pages. Illustrated in black-and-white with pictorial endpapers, 2 plates, including a portrait frontispiece, full-page illustrations & vignettes in the text after engravings by Jacques Callot. The contents are very good. Laid in is the business card of Owen Biddle, Attorney-at-Law.

Moncure Biddle, from the famous Philadelphia Biddle family, was an investment banker. a famous bibliophile, a connoisseur of editions of the classics and, by reputation, an eccentric. During the 1940s he published an annual "Christmas Letter" on a topic of literary or bibliographic interest. This book, issued for Christmas 1942, addresses the work of George Borrow and is dedicated to the memory of John Poe.

Moncure Biddle (1882-1956) was a Philadelphia investment banker, but was also known as a bibliophile and eccentric. This booklet, which apparently he sent to friends at Christmas time, discusses many books on the subject of flowers.
