In 'A Shadow of Death,' Brock, a wealthy traveler, is photographing an abandoned temple in India when he sees a ghastly murder involving a cobra reenacted by shadows that appear out of nowhere in broad daylight, but no one believes him. 'A Self-Contained Residence' is an Aickmanesque tale of Marling, a wealthy, isolated, disaffected man, who becomes haunted by both his past and future selves the further he withdraws from the world and society. Best of all is 'The Cremation of Colonel Calverly,' a weird mystery in which the Colonel's much younger wife, Kathleen, poisons her husband and finds herself pursued by his ghost. While the supernatural elements of this novelette are ultimately rationalized, the solution, which involves grave robbing, mysterious drugs, suspended animation, and a doppelgänger, is marvelous, as is the ending" (Boyd White).
