Zu den bildstärksten Beuys-Aktionen gehört Iphigenie auf Tauris, aufgeführt im Theater am Turm in Frankfurt anlässlich der Experimenta 3 von 1969: Joseph Beuys im Pelzmantel mit einem leuchtend weißen Pferd auf dunkler Bühne. Mythos und Drama der Iphigenie dienten Beuys dazu, auf die Freiheit des Einzelnen, die Kreativität des Individuums hinzuweisen. Das Ausstellungsbuch Ich (Ich selbst die Iphigenie) dokumentiert mit zahlreichen Objekten und Zeichnungen, den Photographien von Abisag Tüllmann und Ute Klophaus sowie Statements von Eva Beuys, Botho Strauß, Peter Handke und vielen anderen dieses bewegende Kunstereignis von vor über vierzig Jahren. Peter Handke, Augenzeuge der Aktion, schreibt: Je länger aber das Ereignis sich entfernt desto stärker werden das Pferd und der Mann, der auf der Bühne herumgeht, und die Stimmen aus den Lautsprechern zu einem Bild, das man ein Wunschbild nennen könnte. In der Erinnerung scheint es einem eingebrannt in das eigene Leben, ein Bild, das in einem Nostalgie bewirkt und auch den Willen, an solchen Bildern selber zu arbeiten: denn erst als Nachbild fängt es auch in einem selber zu arbeiten an. Und eine aufgeregte Ruhe überkommt einen, wenn man daran denkt: es aktiviert einen, es ist so schmerzlich schön, daß es utopisch, und das heißt: politisch wird.
