Das Gegenstandsverständnis enthält eine auf emanzipatorischen Werten fußende Schul- und Gesellschaftskritik, die u. a. auf Fromms und Adornos pädagogischen und sozialpsychologischen Annahmen basiert. Im empirischen Teil wird in einer qualitativen Studie untersucht, welche spezifischen Problemlagen moderne, sich linksalternativ verstehende, Jugendliche im Schulsystem haben.Die gewonnenen Erkenntnisse werden anschließend im Lichte der Theorie des Gesellschaftscharakters beleuchtet, und es wird der Frage nachgegangen, wie ein Lernen und Leben jenseits kapitalistischer Verwertungslogiken in Deutschland realisiert werden könnte.Im Rahmen des Sozialkonstruktivismus wird von der Annahme ausgegangen, dass es keinen objektiven Zugang zur Realität gibt.
