This is a hardcover book with 408 pages including many illustrations and fold-outs. The leather binding is strong with the covers and all pages firmly attached. The pages are clean and supple with some light foxing - no tears or chips. There are several fold-outs in the back illustrating various machinery and dyeing techniques. This 190 year old book is amazingly well preserved and in great condition - I can send photos on request. This is Volume I only. The covers are fully attached with no tears and the nameplate on the spine is still intact and readable.

2nd edition. 2 volumes. Illustrated with plates. 8vo. 8-1/2" x 5-1/8" Claude Louis Berthollet was most noted for applying the [then] newly-discovered oxygenated muriatic acid to vegetable colors for the purpose of bleaching. The revolutionary results of Berthollet's experiments, conducted in collaboration with his son, A. B. Berthollet, were first published in 1791, in their "Elemens de l'Art de la Teinture." In 1809, Berthollet published a second edition of his work which included many important modifications & additions. The Scottish chemist Andrew Ure translated this second edition, appending his own notes & additional illustrative plates. Ure's edition, here offered, included details of the newest research on dyeing & dyestuffs, particularly the discoveries of J. B. Vitalis which appeared in his "Cours Elementaire de Teinture" [Paris, 1823]. In addition, the plates contributed by Ure depicted some of the newest machinery used in the active English dyeing establishments of the period. Ure also included a table for converting French weights & measures into the English equivalents. VG (some chipping to title labels/avg wear/usual foxing). With additions by Andre Ure of Elements de l'art de la teinture (first published 1791) combined with Description de l'art du blanchiment par lacide muriatique oxygene (1795). The Elements of Dying was "a systematic study and scientific discussion of the nature of dyeing." Berthollet used "dephlogisticated marine acid", i.e. chroline gas for his agent. Berthollet's son Amedee continued his father's work and launched a business in the chemical industry and contributed to this book. "Berthollet was an early champion in France of the value of chemical theory in the enhancement of industrial processes." Encyclopedia Britannica. Claude Louis Berthollet was an important French chemist. He is best known for his work on reverse chemical reactions, chlorine bleaching, gunpowder, and chemical nomenclature. His fame was not limited to France and he was a member of the Royal Society of London, the Swedish Academy, Royal Institute of the Netherlands, Royal Society of Edinburgh and Ameican Academy of Arts and Sciences.
