Cette période, qui connaît de profonds changements, modifie la représentation du désir érotique, dont les sophistications, évoquées par les classiques de la littérature, Jinpingmei (" Fleur de prunus dans un vase d'or ", 1600), Rouputuan de Li Yu (" Le Tapis de prière en chair ", 1650) et le fameux Hongloumeng (" Le Rêve dans le pavillon rouge ", 1740) de Cao Xueqin, s'imprègnent progressivement d' influences occidentales. À cet égard, les. photographies de maisons closes et de prostituées, prises entre i88o et 1920, rappellent à de plus prosaïques et brutales réalités, utile contrepoint au charme souriant d'un art dont, à la différence de la tradition japonaise, la cruauté reste toujours exclue. La typologie de ces objets est inépuisable : peintures sous verre, albums peints sur papier de moelle, éventails, porcelaines, paravents, chaussons, flacons à priser, sculptures surtout, en toutes matières : le bois, la corne, le jade, l'ivoire, telles ces fameuses doctor's ladies prétendument prophylactiques, plus sûrement ludiques. Si la plupart de ces figures exhibent un érotisme sans fard, artistement provocateur, où les lignes courbes, voire les entrelacs, se rehaussent de couleurs savamment disposées aux endroits pertinents ; si l'unité et la dualité ne craignent pas de laisser souvent place à une pluralité joyeuse ; si l'exhibition est en perpétuelle quête d'action, grivoiserie ni perversion ne sont de mise.
