Pictorial jacket showing Awol the dobermann pinscher with various Australian animals including kangaroos, wild cattle, dingoes and a koala. Some edge wear creasing and loss to top and bottom of jacket and spine, corners rubbed and bruised, some lean, not price clipped (9/6), no inscriptions, internally clean and tight, overall a vg copy of a scarce classic, 192pp. Bertrand Leslie Shurtleff (1897-1967,) was an American football offensive lineman who spent three seasons in the National Football League with the Providence Steam Rollers and the Boston Bulldogs, after playing for Brown University. Later he was a professional wrestler, teacher, public speaker and author. 'Awol at Large' was the third of his 'Awol' books about the ex US army K9. This is the adventures of Awol in Australia after he is accidentally left behind in quarantine, and his efforts to find his owners in the Australian bush.

Gray cloth; some soiling and staining; scuffing/bumping to spine ends and board corners. Text block edges toned with additional soiling to top edge. Initial and rear leaves (particularly endpapers) well foxed; lighter interior foxing. Author's page-long ink inscription "For Miss Martha Young with greetings, good wishes, and applause from Bert Finck June, 1923 Louisville, Ky" on front free endpaper all in an oddly cumbersome cursive for a 53 year old (so perhaps suffering from some ailment). Binding is firm. Features a collection of essays collectively gathered as "Shadows on the Wall" (pages 1-19) followed by five plays: "The Poet," "The House of Tragedy," "The Unwelcome Visitor," "Remorse," and "Adversity." A collection of Edward Bertrand Finck's personal papers (primarily correspondence) are held by the Special Collections Department of The Filson Historical Society in Louisville, Kentucky.
