Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. RABBIS AT WAR THE CANRA STORY BY RABBI PHILIP S. BERNSTEIN 1971 FIRST EDITION. I am pleased to be able to offer an interesting book about the experience of the Jewish Rabbis who served as Chaplains during World War II. The book is titled: "Rabbis at WarThe CANRA Story," by Rabbi Philip S. Bernstein. Herewith a short quote from the Preface to set the stage: "Against the background of Viet Nam, it is hard to recall that there once was a popular war, but there was. The American people overwhelmingly gave their support to the Allied Cause in World War II. The Jews were practically unanimous in their response, for this was the war against Hitler. Over six hundred thousand Jews served in the U. S. Armed forces, the largest number in uniform in all Jewish history. More than half of all rabbis of the country volunteered for the chaplaincy; three hundred and eleven were accepted and served in the various branches of the armed forces. The Organization and activities of the body known as CANRA (Committee on Army and Navy Religious Activities of the National Jewish Welfare Board) was one of the most remarkable developments of that period." This is their story. This medium-sized hard cover book (6 ĵ x 9 ĵ inches, 95 pages plus several appendices) was published (as a "bonus book"laid-in letter) by the American Jewish Historical Society of Waltham, Mass, dated 1971 and a First Edition with the same date on the title and copyright pages. It is bound in dark blue cloth and has gilt titles on the cover and spine. It includes any number of b&w photos of the Rabbis and their involvement in the war effort. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The hard covers are clean, bright and unbumped; there is a hint of sunning to the spine. Inside, the book is unmarked and the pages and photos are bright white and clean throughout. Both hinges are fully intact, and the binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.
