Seller: Far Adventures Travel, Cortlandt Manor, NY, U.S.A.
Hardcover. Condition: Fair. Martin Bernatz (illustrator). Contains a moderate-colored folding map of Africa including 14 full page wood-engraved illustrations and many in the text. The illustrator, Johann Martin Bernatz based his colored plates on sketches made by Barth himself, with some additional illustrations by M. & N. Hanhart handling the lithography/printing processes. Native of Hamburg Germany, Henrich Barth was one of the early European explorers of Africa. His scholarly preparation, ability to speak and write Arabic, learning African languages, and character meant that he carefully documented the details of the cultures he visited. He was unique in that he was one of the first to understand and record uses of oral history of peoples. He established friendships with African rulers and scholars during his five years of travel (1849-1855). After the deaths of two European companions, he completed his travels with the aid of Africans. Additionally, he wrote and published a five-volume account of his travels in both English and German. Also notes and extracts from Mr. Richardson's account of the expedition, and a sketch of Denham and Clapperton's expedition. Some age stains. Original publisher's cloth binding with corners worn and spine semi-detached. Hardbound.
