Edinburgh: Printed for Andrew Bell Engraver. 1778.  Folio atlas in later quarter brown leather with brown cloth over boards. Raised bands and title label with gold text on spine.  Ghost impressions of some writing on leather. Other minor scuffs. Corners bumped. New end papers. Two title pages and address to Alexander Monro. Variably foxed (greater on front and rear leaves, less so through middle of book), but involving plates. Some mild transfer onto versos. 40 plates (printed single sided) and 86 numbered text pages. Complete with both title pages.  This is a later (posthumous) English-language atlas adapted from Albinus' Tabulae sceleti et musculorum corporis humani. Prostant apud Joannem & Hermannum Verbeek of 1747, but without the elaborate scenic backgrounds that the bodies were previously engraved against.  "Albinus (1697 - 1770), a native of Frankfurt, was no doubt the finest descriptive anatomist of his day, and his works were especially endowed by the artistic copper engravings by the renowned Jan Wandelaer. pp. xxiv, 332, 106, 2 Three Whole Length Anatomical Figures., (ii) Books printed for John and Paul Knapton, in Ludgate-Street. Contemporary boards, new calf reback, new corners, the title and succeeding leaf dusty in the margins and with the top corner of the title repaired not affecting text, the next five leaves with old and faded damp-marking in the fore- and lower margins, the final two leaves of the book with a small ink mark in the top margin, overall a nice copy. *See RUSSELL British Anatomy 1525-1800, #8 : 'This is the text to accompany the 1749 edition of the Albinus plates published by Knapton. It is also the text for A compleat system of the blood vessels and nerves, &c. London, 1750. The latter work is listed under Anonymous [#13].' Russell does not mention the penultimate leaf - Three Whole Length Anatomical Figures; he also makes an error in the pagination, '322' instead of '332'.…

Large folio, 2 leaves (half-title and title), pp. 295, (1), and 47 engraved plates on 43 leaves + 54 outline plates on 50 leaves. Title printed in red and black with engraved vignette, woodcut initials. Contemporary mottled calf, spine richly gilt in compartments (head of spine worn and short crack at top of upper joint, tip of one corner worn) with red morocco label, sides with floral gilt border (missing silk ties), blue marbled edges. Arms of Rotterdam in gilt on sides; bookplate of the Dutch physician J.A.J. Barge (1884?1952). Second edition (first, 1744) to be edited by Albinus of Eustachius?s anatomical plates, made in 1552 but not printed and published until 1714 (G&M 391). Regarded as being more accurate than those of Vesalius, Eustachius? illustrations show him to have been in the forefront of early anatomical investigation. As with other critical editions which Albinus published, this is a beautifully produced book. The plates were re-engraved by Wandelaar, who was the engraver for Albinus?s own anatomical plates, and lettered outline plates were provided. Some of the full-figure plates have two outline plates, lettered and unlettered. Albinus wrote the preface, and added extensive notes to each plate. Inserted at the beginning is a printed leaf dated 1805 recording the graduation of G.H. Waebler from the Gymnasium Erasmianum in Rotterdam (hence the arms on the sides), the second oldest school in the Netherlands. The leaf is completed in manuscript and signed by the rector and teachers. Albinus?s edition, according to C.D. O?Malley in DSB, ?is the most desirable one for purposes of study.? Much rarer than the 1744 edition, Choulant (p. 202) clearly never saw a copy of this edition as he gives the incorrect date and says it was unillustrated.…

First English edition translated from the Latin. Tables of the Human Muscles contains 40 engraved plates. Of the intitial 24 plates, 12 are in outline. Each plate has 2-12 pages of descriptive text. The Compleat System of the Blood-Vessels and Nerves.lacks the second (posterior view) female anatomy engraving. Rebacked in late 19th century calf with seven raised bands and a red morocco label to spine. Rear board nearly detached. Moisture marks to some lower edges not affecting plates. Occasional archival tape repairs to edges. Previous owners' names and repairs to front fly. Circa 28.75 x 21.5 in (73 x 54.5 cm) [vi] [123] [41].…
