If you want to understand ancient Egypt, the Nile Delta is of key importance. Excavations and surveys in the Delta keep unearthing new information about how the ancient Egyptians lived, how they envisaged the afterlife and how they interacted with other cultures. The study of finds from the Delta gives us a glimpse into the beli…efs and everyday life of the ancient Egyptians. From 1979 to 2014 Willem van Haarlem worked on several archaeological sites in the Nile Delta, focusing on the excavations at Tell Ibrahim Awad in the eastern Delta from 1991 onward. At the same time he was curator of Egyptian Antiquities at the Allard Pierson, the heritage collections of the University of Amsterdam. On the occasion of his retirement a number of archaeologists, Egyptologists and museum curators have written a series of short studies in his honour, varying from current excavation results from Delta sites to new or renewed research into museum objects from this region. This book offers a rich palette of subjects to scholars interested in Delta archaeology and above all provides hitherto unpublished materials from excavations and museum depots that will inspire the next generation of Nile Delta scholars.

These mummified bodies of animals-from cats and falcons to scarabs and fish-played a role in animal cults and religion, but could also represe…nt a favourite pet or serve as food for the deceased. Especially in Graeco-Roman Egypt, large numbers of animal mummies were deposited as votive offerings related to animal cults, thus playing a significant role in local economies. Studying their remains helps us understand the relation of the ancient Egyptians with their natural environment.From 2021 to 2024 the Allard Pierson organised a multidisciplinary research project around the thirteen animal mummies in the collection. Questions not only focused on identifying the animal species and recording post-depositional traces related to provenance histories, but also on recording information related to the mummification process. The rarely occurring mummified genus of Bagrus might shed light on the role of this fish in Egyptian animal cults, while the analysis of the crocodile skeleton brings the identification of mummified crocodile species a step further. The mysterious falcon mummy without an animal inside and the mummy containing half the body of a young cat contribute to the ongoing discussion on how the ancient Egyptians considered the animal's relation with the purpose of the cult. Ever since the birth of scholarly Egyptology with the decipherment of the hieroglyphic script two hundred years ago, alternative interpretations and imaginative theories have flourished alongside it. They intertwined with egalitarian and spiritual tendencies in society during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when ancient Egypt inspired countless mediums, artists, and movements from freemasonry to the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. More recently alternative interpretations have inspired comic-book authors and nationalist Chinese bloggers.It would be a mistake, however, for academics to simply view these alternative theories as fantasies that are best ignored.
