Dédié à tous les empereurs, rois, princes, souverains des quatre parties du monde, son ouvrage, les Farfadets (1821), est un…récit autobiographique en forme d'apologie. Il narre dans le détail les vicissitudes d'un homme persécuté, toute sa vie, par des entités diaboliques tantôt invisibles tantôt présentes sous l'aspect d'individus très ordinaires quelquefois même prestigieux. C'est ainsi que l'illustre Pinel, le grand patron de la Salpêtrière, et dont Berbiguier était le patient, se trouve figurer en tête de la meute infernalico-farfadéenne, source inépuisable de tous les maux de l'humanité. Précisément, si Berbiguier s'adresse aux hommes de pouvoir, c'est pour les inviter à tirer profit de la connaissance qu'il a acquise du monde infernal et pour étendre à tous les peuples les bénéfices de sa propre croisade. Car Berbiguier n'est pas une victime passive. Il est le fléau des farfadets. Aux embûches et aux maléfices il répond par des incantations, des prières, des rites magiques. On assiste ainsi, tout au long du récit, à une véritable psychomachie qui restitue, sous les horizons quotidiens du Paris de la Restauration, les enjeux de l'éternelle lutte du Bien et du Mal. Aliénistes et psychiatres, depuis le milieu du XIXe siècle jusqu'à nos jours, se sont beaucoup intéressés à Berbiguier. Assurément, les annales françaises de la psychopathologie n'offrent pas d'exemple d'un ouvrage aussi longuement soutenu et d'une élaboration textuelle aussi parfaitement maîtrisée. Avec les Farfadets, on est en présence d'un monument littéraire de la paranoïa auquel on ne pourrait guère comparer que les Mémoires d'un névropathe du président Schreber. L'ouvrage de Berbiguier illustre magistralement tous les tropes et toutes les déviances logiques d'une rhétorique du délire. Berbiguier occupe une place de premier plan dans la galerie de ces Excentriques que constituent les Fous littéraires. Mais la folie du propos est ici tellement liée à la vie de chaque jour qu'on ne perd jamais de vue, par-delà son délire, l'homme qui souffre, qui vole au secours des autres persécutés et qui se jette dans l'entreprise d'écriture comme en la seule promesse de salut pour lui-même et pour l'humanité.
