Octavo, pp. [i-v] vi [vii-viii] [1-2] 3-311 [312: printer's imprint], publisher's decorated light blue-gray cloth, front and spine panels stamped in dark blue, bottom edge untrimmed. First edition. A legendary genre rarity, this collection includes a group of four "Spook Stories": "The Case of Frank Hampden," "Mrs. Andrew's Control," "The Ape" (termed "excellent" by Bleiler) and "'Through,'" none of which were reprinted in Benson collections during his lifetime. In addition, the collection includes two criminous tales ("The Countess of Lowndes Square" and "The Blackmailer of Park Lane") and two "Crank Stories" ("The Tragedy of Oliver Bowman" and "Philip's Safety Razor"). Of the three Benson brothers, "Fred made the most lasting impression as a ghost story writer. His work, at its best, is among the finest in the literature, as excellent as [M. R.] James's at times." - Sullivan, ed., The Penguin Encyclopedia of Horror and the Supernatural, p. 30. Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction 141. Wilson, Shadows in the Attic, p. 66. Bleiler (1978), p. 21. Not in Reginald (1979; 1992). Hubin (1994), p. 66. Spine panel a bit sunned, a clean, tight, very good copy. A rare book seldom found in any condition, this copy is, overall, quite a nice example of this cheaply made book. (#178245).…
