Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. Author Bennett, W. H. (Editor) Title The Century Bible: Exodus. Introductions, Revised Version with Notes, Index and Map Publication Details Edinburgh: T.C. & E.C. Jack, circa 1900s. Printed by permission of the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge. Condition Very Good. Original publisher's bindi…ng in very good condition with minimal shelf wear commensurate with age. Binding remains sound and secure. Internally clean and well preserved. Ownership inscription and Ex Libris bookplate of Reverend Dr David Monkton to the front endpaper. Pages are generally bright and clean, with the text, notes, index and map remaining highly presentable. Description A handsome volume from the highly regarded Century Bible series, presenting the Book of Exodus with scholarly introductions, the Revised Version text, extensive explanatory notes, an index and map. Edited by the eminent biblical scholar William Henry Bennett (1855-1931), one of the leading Old Testament scholars of his generation, this work reflects the growing influence of historical and critical approaches to biblical interpretation at the turn of the twentieth century. The Century Bible series sought to make the best contemporary biblical scholarship accessible to clergy, students and lay readers alike, combining rigorous academic study with practical usefulness. Bennett's commentary on Exodus remains an excellent example of early modern biblical scholarship and offers valuable insight into the historical, literary and theological dimensions of one of the most important books of the Old Testament. This volume benefits from distinguished ecclesiastical provenance, having formed part of the personal library of Reverend Dr David Monkton (1932-2025), whose ownership inscription and Ex Libris bookplate are present. Dr Monkton devoted more than half a century to Christian ministry and theological scholarship, serving as a Methodist minister and later as a Supernumerary Presbyter within the Nottingham and Derby Methodist District. He was also active as a police chaplain and contributed to public discussion of faith through published articles and commentary. The book therefore comes from the collection of a lifelong clergyman, preacher and scholar whose vocation was dedicated to the study, interpretation and communication of Scripture. Such provenance is particularly appropriate for a serious biblical commentary and provides a tangible connection to a lifetime of theological study and ministry. The presence of Dr Monkton's ownership inscription and bookplate significantly enhances the historical interest and appeal of the volume. An attractive and increasingly desirable example of early twentieth-century biblical scholarship and a worthy addition to collections of theology, biblical studies, church history and ecclesiastical provenance. Provenance From the library of Reverend Dr David Monkton (1932-2025), Methodist minister, theologian, police chaplain and Supernumerary Presbyter, with ownership inscription and Ex Libris bookplate.

Condition Very Good. Original publisher's bind…ing in very good condition with minimal shelf wear commensurate with age. Binding remains sound and secure. Internally clean and well preserved. Ownership inscription and Ex Libris bookplate of Reverend Dr David Monkton to the front endpaper. Pages are generally bright and clean, with the text, notes, index and map remaining highly presentable. Description A handsome volume from the highly regarded Century Bible series, presenting the Book of Genesis with scholarly introductions, the Revised Version text, extensive explanatory notes, an index and map. Edited by the eminent biblical scholar William Henry Bennett (1855-1920), Professor of Old Testament Language and Literature at Hackney and New Colleges, London, this work represents an important contribution to the development of modern biblical scholarship in the early twentieth century. The Century Bible series sought to make contemporary biblical scholarship accessible to clergy, students and lay readers alike, combining rigorous academic research with practical usefulness. Bennett's commentary on Genesis reflects the critical and historical approaches that transformed biblical studies during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, while remaining accessible to the serious general reader. As the opening book of the Bible and the Hebrew Scriptures, Genesis occupies a unique place in religious, literary and cultural history. Its narratives of Creation, Adam and Eve, Noah and the Flood, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and Joseph have shaped the religious imagination of countless generations and continue to be central to theological study and debate. Bennett's commentary explores the historical background, literary composition and theological significance of these foundational texts, providing valuable insight into one of the most influential books ever written. Such provenance is particularly fitting for a commentary on Genesis, the foundational book of both Jewish and Christian tradition, and provides a tangible connection to a lifetime of theological study and ministry. The presence of Dr Monkton's ownership inscription and bookplate significantly enhances the historical interest and appeal of the volume. An attractive and increasingly desirable example of early twentieth-century biblical scholarship and a worthy addition to collections of theology, biblical studies, church history, Old Testament studies and ecclesiastical provenance. Provenance From the library of Reverend Dr David Monkton (1932-2025), Methodist minister, theologian, police chaplain and Supernumerary Presbyter, with ownership inscription and Ex Libris bookplate.
