Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: Very Good. An attractive original 1946 issue of the postwar hit "Rumors Are Flying," with words and music by prolific songwriting team Bennie Benjamin and George Weiss. Published by Oxford Music Corporation, this edition features a blue monochrome portrait of Perry Como, whose popular recording helped prop…el the song to national success during the autumn of 1946. The rear cover advertises contemporary Santly-Joy song folios, while the interior includes complete lyrics and piano/vocal arrangement with ukulele chord diagrams. The copyright page confirms the original 1946 publication by Oxford Music Corporation. The song became one of the biggest sheet music successes of late 1946, reaching the top position on Billboard's best-selling sheet music chart during its initial release. Very Good condition. Complete and sound. Moderate age toning consistent with vintage paper, light edge and corner wear, a few small creases, and mild handling wear. Original owner's name ("Nancy Whitman") neatly written in pencil at the top edge of the front cover. Interior music pages remain clean and fully legible with no tears or significant markings observed. Spine fold remains secure with no loose pages. An attractive display copy suitable for collectors or framing. A major collectible feature of this example is the signed cover artwork by Albert Wilfred Barbelle (1887-1957), one of the most important commercial illustrators of the Tin Pan Alley era. Barbelle produced hundreds of iconic sheet music covers between the 1910s and 1940s and is represented in the collections of the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History, which identifies him as the artist behind numerous classic popular music covers. His signature appears at the lower left of this cover, and institutional bibliographies specifically identify this 1946 Rumors Are Flying edition as a 'cover design by Barbelle.' The song itself also represents an important collaboration between Bennie Benjamin and George Weiss, two of the most successful American popular songwriters of the mid-twentieth century. Weiss later co-wrote enduring standards including The Lion Sleeps Tonight, Can't Help Falling in Love, and What a Wonderful World, making this an appealing early example of his songwriting career. Albert Wilfred Barbelle (illustrator).

Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: Very Good. A handsome postwar Tin Pan Alley issue associated with Perry Como during his ascent as one of America's defining radio and recording vocalists of the late 1940s. The striking blue-and-silver Art Deco-influenced cover design, paired with Como's portrait, gives the piece strong display appeal. The… rear advertisement panel promoting Santly-Joy song folios and Perry Como collections offers an excellent period snapshot of mid-century American popular music publishing. Songwriters Bennie Benjamin and George Weiss would later become especially influential figures in American songwriting, with Weiss eventually co-writing standards including 'What a Wonderful World.' Condition: Very Good. Moderate edge wear and age toning; light creasing and rubbing to wraps; small corner wear and mild handling marks consistent with use. Interior remains clean and highly presentable with no major tears, markings, or losses observed. Spine fold remains sound. A solid collector-grade example with attractive cover presentation. Edition/Printing: 1946 first edition sheet music issue, published by Santly-Joy, Inc., New York, with original Perry Como featured cover and period advertising retained on rear wrapper. This item is stored and ships in a protective, archival sleeve. Bennie Benjamin (1907-1964) was a prolific American songwriter whose collaborations shaped the popular music landscape of the 1940s and 1950s. George Weiss (1921-2010) became one of the era's best-known lyricists and producers, later associated with enduring standards including 'Can't Help Falling in Love' and 'What a Wonderful World.' Perry Como (1912-2001), featured on the cover, was among the most commercially successful vocalists of the postwar period, known for his relaxed baritone style and enormously popular radio and television appearances.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st. Cloth, 295 pages, illustrations (chiefly colour), portraits; 25 cm. Published on the occasion of an exhibition held at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, October 24, 2012 to April 14, 2013. Firm binding, clean inside copy. Dust jacket protected in a mylar cover. A large…-format coffee-table book. Richly illustrated with colour plates. *** "In the decades around 1900, postcards were Twitter, email, Flickr and Facebook, all wrapped into one. A postcard craze swept the world, and billions of cards were bought, mailed and pasted into albums. Many famous artists turned to the new medium, but one of the great pleasures and enigmas of postcards is how some of the most beautiful and interesting examples were made by artists whose names we barely know. Drawing on the riches of the Leonard A. Lauder Postcard Collection (probably the finest and most comprehensive collection of its type), this gorgeous book traces the historical and cultural themes--enthralling, exciting, and sometimes disturbing--of the modern age. The first general publication on the postcard as an artistic medium since the mid-1970s, The Postcard Age is organized thematically, with chapters devoted to urban life, the changing role of women, sports, celebrity, new technologies, the stylish collectors' cards of Art Nouveau and World War I. The result is at once a vivid picture of the concerns and pastimes of the turn of the century and a sampler from the Lauder's vast archives." - Publisher. Size: 4to. Collectible.
