August 1849 in Astoria, heute Teil von Queens, Bundesstaat New York) war ein US-amerikanischer Politiker (Demokratisch-Republikanische Partei), Ethnologe, Linguist und Diplomat. Er war Abgeordneter und Senator von Pennsylvania und der am längsten amtierende ? von 1801 bis 1814 ? Finanzminister in der Geschichte der USA. In diesem Posten führte er, das Zurückzahlen von Staatsanleihen ausgenommen, größtenteils die Politik seines föderalistischen Vorgängers Alexander Hamilton weiter. Danach betätigte er sich einige Jahre als Botschafter in Frankreich und dem Vereinigten Königreich.
