Kurz danach verliebt er sich in Thea, eine hinreizende und reiche Frau. Mit ihr fährt er nach Mexiko, wo sie Eidechsen mit einem gezüchteten Adler jagen wollen, aber der Plan und die Beziehung scheitern nach einem Unfall. Am Ende des Romans befindet sich Augie allein in Europa nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg. Durch die zahlreichen Rückschläge ist er zynisch geworden, seinen Optimismus verliert er aber nicht.
