Beckwith (1876-1951) was a newspaper editor and amateur anthropologist from Delta, Utah who was fascinated with Native American artifacts and petroglyphs. With the help of a Paiute man named Joseph J. Pickyavit (known locally as "Indian Joe") , Beckwith traveled around the region and attempted to interpret the many petroglyphs he found.
