Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1983 Oxford University Press large format hardcover edition. Light reading wear else very good condition. Signed by the author to previous owner. From the dustjacket: Sir John Beazley (1885-1970) virtually created a new subject in the history of art when he brought to Greek vases the method of painter recognition which Giovanni Morelli had inaugurated for Renaissance art late in the nineteenth century and which Bernard Berenson quickly popularized. Today, thanks to Beazley, an artistic personality in sixth-and fifth-century Athens can be as clear to us as that of a Renaissance artist, although we rarely know even his name and never have contemporary documentation of his work. The Berlin Painter presents 82 drawings from the Beazley Archive (most of them previously unpublished) which Beazley 'traced off' vases by an artist active from about 505 to 460 BC. These pencil drawings record details of draughtsmanship which can elude the most skilful photographer and thus provide incomparable material for a stylistic study. All of the vases drawn are also photographed, enabling the reader to examine details in different media. Whenever possible Beazley's words - on perhaps his favourite painter - are quoted to make the book an explanation of his method. Athenian vase-painting concerns itself above all with the representation of the human figure and the analysis of a painter's style depends heavily upon recognizing the way in which he renders features of anatomy and drapery. To the study of Beazley's Berlin Painter Dr Kurtz brings a knowledge of anatomy acquired through clinical studies and practised in lectures to artists from Oxford's Ruskin School of Drawing. The chapter 'Anatomy for Art Historians' describes human anatomy clearly and simply in terms of figures by the Berlin Painter, some of which are presented as ecorche drawings. The Berlin Painter offers an approach to the study of style which will be of interest to all connoisseurs of the Fine Arts. Beazley, Sir John (illustrator). Signed by Author(s).…

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First edition. 699pp. (in text volume) plus 256 plates. Quarto [28.5 cm] Navy blue cloth over boards, with gilt stamping on the spines. Extremities lightly bumped and rubbed; small scuff marks to the bottom fore-edge corner of the text blocks. The fore-edge corners of the plate volume are a bit abraded, the result of having sustained some light moisture damage. The dust jacket of volume 1 has a small loss from the top edge of the spine, obscuring a bit of the title, and measuring 1 and 1/2" wide by 1" deep. There are also a handful of smaller closed and open tears along the edges. The rear panel of the dust jacket of volume 2 is subtly dampstained from the head to foot near the spine. The jacket still presents relatively well. Overall, despite the aforementioned flaws, the set is quite attractive. May require extra postage due to weight. This work aims at giving classified lists of all the red-figured vases assigned to the fabrics of Lucania, Campania, and Sicily. Close to 4,500 vases are included, with most attributed to individual painters or at least placed in stylistic groups. Over 1,000 of the more significant or interesting vases, including representative works by all the foremost painters many of which have not been published before, are illustrated upon 256 plates.…
