It inspired the great New England historian William H. Prescott to produce, in 1843, his brilliant three-volume History of the Conquest of Mexico. It has appeared in over 200 editions and at least twenty languages. Prescott's dramatic and carefully documented account stands as one of the most reliable chronicles of the 16th-century confrontation between the Old World Spaniards and the New World Mexican peoples.
