Contact seller5-star sellerHardcover. Presumed first edition/first printing. 254, [2] p. Includes illustrations. This is described as a dramatic and informative bok about our new army--in traiing and in action. As the United States Army passed the 1, 400, 000 mark in numbers of officers and men, the author felt it would be interesting to show the life of…the soldiers from the day of entrance throught their service in the varied branches of the Army. Fascinating snapshot of American soldiers taken at the start of U.S. involvement in WWII. The author may have been the same officer for whom this 1989 obituary was written: "William H. Baumer, an industrial executive and a retired United States Army officer who helped plan the invasion of Normandy in World War II, died of heart failure. He was 79 years old. Mr. Baumer, who was born in Omaha, was a 1933 graduate of the United States Military Academy. While teaching at West Point he received a master's degree in political science from Columbia University. In 1942 he was assigned to the Army's War Plans Division, where he worked under Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower and Gen. Albert C. Wedemeyer before becoming the American representative to the British War Cabinet. After the war he headed the Armed Forces Radio Network. He left active duty as a colonel in 1950 but remained a member of the Army Reserve until 1969, when he retired with the rank of major general." Good in fair dust jacket. DJ worn, torn, soiled and chipped. Pencil erasure residue on fep.
