Huthart Collection.; "I am immensely proud to have been allowed the opportunity of acquiring the Non-Iwami Netsuke Collection of Robert (Bob) S. Huthart, offered for sale in this catalogue. Bob's collection is unquestionably one of the greatest assembled since the last war, and is the most important to have come onto the market since the M.T. Hindson collection was auctioned by Sotheby's in the late 60s and early 70s. It contains no fewer than fourteen pieces by Masanao of Kyoto, eighteen by Toyomasa of Tamba, and eleven by Masatsugu of Osaka, as well as one of the most pleasing pieces carved by Tomotada, the famous cat with captured rat (catalogue number 91), and wonderful unsigned pieces, many from some of the most renowned collections assembled earlier this century. The collection represents pieces from most of the great masters from each of the most important netsuke regions, and Bob's unerring eye has ensured that these are some of the best carvings from these masters. Examples of this are the six quite superb representations from Sukenaga of Hida, the four from Ikkan of Nagoya, and the seven from Tomokazu of Gifu." excerpt from the foreword by Barry Davies, 3 May 1998.
